Astypalaia does not work as one uniform beach map. Some swims sit almost inside the Chora-Pera Gialos-Livadi rhythm, some belong to the calmer eastern side around Maltezana, and others only make sense once you accept that the road or the boat is part of the beach day itself.
Pera Gialos matters because it is not only the old harbor and marina below Chora. It is also the first sea-facing edge of the island, the place where a short swim, a port-side meal and an opening walk can still fit inside the same arrival block without breaking the day.

Livadi is the most useful full beach near Chora
The municipality places Livadi about 2 kilometres southwest of Chora and describes it as a fertile valley and seaside settlement. In practice, that makes Livadi the cleanest choice when you want a real beach block without giving up the castle-town evening. It is more than a quick dip and less of a commitment than the outer island roads.
3
Plakes works as a rocky Chora-side extension
The municipality describes Plakes as a quiet area on the road toward Maltezana, with rocks, clear water and a sunset-friendly mood. That makes it useful for a shorter sea stop when you want something more local and less sandy than Livadi, especially if you are already thinking in terms of Chora plus a late-afternoon swim.
4
Maltezana and Analipsi define the eastern beach mood
Visit Greece and the municipality both treat Maltezana as a real eastern settlement, not just a named beach. It sits after the narrow central strip at Steno, works around a natural harbor, and creates a calmer, broader beach day that feels different from the vertical Chora side. It is especially good when you want the eastern side to be the day's main chapter.
5
Boat days to Koutsomytis, Kounoupes and smaller islets are their own category
Visit Greece highlights the boat outings from Maltezana and Pera Gialos toward nearby islets such as Koutsomytis and Kounoupes. These should not be planned as small add-ons after town time. They are their own sea day, with timing, weather and boat availability shaping the whole route.
6
Vatses, Kaminakia and Agios Konstantinos belong to the wilder road logic
The western and outer beaches feel stronger once you stop treating them like simple alternatives to Livadi. They belong to a more committed drive or boat approach, where the route itself becomes part of the reward and the island starts to feel rougher, emptier and less polished.
7
Vathy and the remoter edges need fewer stops, not more
The farther coastlines of Astypalaia work best when you simplify the day. If you go for Vathy, Pachia Ammos or another outer-edge route, do not try to combine them with Chora climbs, eastern detours and multiple beach switches. The space is the point.
Practical tips
Do not treat all beaches as equal-distance options. Pera Gialos, Livadi, Maltezana and the outer coves belong to very different day structures.
If you want Chora for sunset and dinner, protect the return time early. Outer beaches usually punish late overplanning.
Boat availability, wind and sea conditions can completely change what the best beach choice is on a given day.
On short trips, one clear beach day usually works better than trying to sample every coast type in one itinerary.
How this page is grounded
Stable beach, settlement and island-layout details were reviewed on March 16, 2026 against official Astypalaia Municipality and Visit Greece material, then translated into planning logic for short stays.
